Querzahnmolche

Der Gattungsname “Ambystoma” kommt wahrscheinlich vom Wort “anabystoma”, was soviel wie “in den Mund stopfen” heißt. Agassiz vermutete jedoch im Jahr 1844, dass das Wort falsch geschrieben und auch so übernommen wurde und eigentlich Amblystoma heißen soll und von den griechischen Worten amblys = stumpf und stoma = Mund kommt. Der deutsche Name “Querzahnmolch” bezieht sich auf die quer angeordneten Zahnreihen bei dieser Gattung.

Bis auf eine Art sind alle Vertreter dieser Gattung endemisch in Mexiko. Nur das Verbreitungsgebiet von Ambystoma tigrinum erstreckt sich bis nach Kanada.
